#687: beck - hollow log (1998, rolling stone state of the union)

even though my former colleague doree shafrir is not the new managing editor of rolling stone's website, i'm really hoping that she'll use her new powers over there to start a weekly web-only series where beck plays his old acoustic songs in an empty room, and every now and then will say something such as, “it was like sitting in plastic furniture all your life and you found a good old rocking chair.”

the heavens seem to be behind that idea, because i just got a quick note from philip burke saying his lovely and woozy beck painting was made for rolling stone.

and as a final point on the subject: i talked to publisher jann wenner for a brief follow-up to my matt taibbi profile, and mr. wenner used the phrase “metaphors and similes and imagery.” what a town!

speaking of observery things, frequent cover artist philip burke, the man who painted history’s greatest carly simon snarl, just posted a painting he made that i think you’ll agree is history’s greatest pre-strum beck. when i listen to his songs i think about danelectros, wobbles, glowing, and vests, so this is more or less the ideal creation.

#617: beck - cold brains, plus lazy flies and broken train (2000, germany)

during a staff meeting today with observer publisher jared kushner, i realized that if he grew his hair long and starting talking in nonsense rhymes he would closely resemble mutations-era beck.

which is cool, though not as cool as mellow gold-era beck.

#390: beck - pay no mind (snoozer) (1994)

back in the mid-90s, when beck was a slacker with the day before yesterday’s socks still on but brains from the distant future, he was so cool he actually had parenthetical song titles that weren’t half bad, like feel like a piece of shit (mind control), she is all (gimme something to eat), and styrofoam chicken (quality time). but prettiest of all was pay no mind (snoozer), a song that pretends it’s a middle-school dropout, except that its lines about giant dildos crushing the sun are written in iambic pentameter.

a beautiful painting i made #3: hey, whoa, i made another beck/fluff painting. how much would this sell for in chelsea? is it better from the first? is it really, really, really awesome?
last night i saw jean-luc godard’s contempt, and i would say that my series beck/fluff is probably a richer, more interesting, more tactile, more intellectual, mellower, fluffier work of art.

a beautiful painting i made, #2: i wrote about beck and marshmallow fluff, and then i made a picture of them together. technology is totally, terribly terrific.

#102: beck - debra (1999, germany)

it’s 73 degrees and sunny in new york city this afternoon. you know what kind of weather that is? that’s love-making weather; italics weather, fuzzy funk-baking weather; falsetto weather; honey-dripped-down-your-spine weather; marshmallow-fluff-in-my-ear weather; it’s beck-listening weather.

and this may not be beck’s best song, but “i want to get with you, only you, and your sister, it think her name is debra,” is his best line. and it sounds good on a 73-degree day.
