#1021: elliott smith - baby britain (1999)

recently i was driving upstate to visit my brother tom on the farm he lives and works on with other disabled people. because i was by myself for the drive and it’s good to have something fun to listen to i made myself a mix of elliott smith songs. why not! even though it’s sad that elliott smith died at age 34 ten years ago today, his music wasn’t all broken bottles in empty parking lots, stained floors, naked mattresses and irreversible damage. just kidding, of course it was. he’s the patron saint of heartbreak. merle haggard made misery soundmanly, stephen merritt turned it into a charming underdog to root for, but elliott smith was the true bard of torment. he was joy’s eulogist… read this and more at the awl!

#823: the everly brothers - cathy’s clown (1960, live)

elliott smith isn’t rhyming when he sings, “first the mic/ then a half cigarette/ singing cathy’s clown,” but it gets me every time anyhow. so does cathy’s clown, so does phil everly’s pickguard on the guitar he played when on t.v. the year it came out, and so does don’s.

see also: harry nilsson plays cathy’s clown and other everly brothers songs.

see also, also: the everly brothers play another song harry nilsson covered.

#749: the black keys - act nice and gentle (kinks cover, live 2004)

so now that the white stripes have been broken up long enough for everyone’s nerves to settle down, the black keys must be pretty thrilled about being the world’s best ongoing monochromatic guitar-and-drums duo, huh? i’d even go so far as to say they tie for the decade’s best kinks cover (though not the best-ever).

#695: elliott smith - thirteen (big star) (1996)

i have caught my first flu of the year, but am really doing my best to fight back to health with multilayered sweaters, saxondale, those oversized cans of trader joe’s soup,an inhuman quantity of tap water, and gobs of emotional mid-90s acoustic guitar.

#692: wye oak (with shearwater’s jonathan meiburg) - strangers (2010, onion av club undercover)

i’ve been listening to such an incredibly excessive amount of kinks lately that it’s sort of difficult to accurately describe. for example, besides the actual kinks albums that are worth listening to everyday, because the kinks are the third best british band (right behind no. 1 and no. 2), i recently bought a $1 copy of the two-record 1974 compilation golden hour of the kinks, which, when i got home to play it, turned out to have a third record hidden inside that was golden hour of the kinks, vol. 2—but even all that isn’t enough, and i’ve had to move on to kinks covers, like elliott smith’s waterloo sunset. and thank god there’s also wye oak, the best young girl-boy band from baltimore not named beach house, doing strangers, the lola-era ballad that i happen to know michael h. miller of the new york observer considers to be the kinks’ finest moment. they’d make michael h. and the kinks proud.

the left banke - pretty ballerina (1967)

well, i’ve found a new favorite song. the verses sound like belle and sebastian covering the velvet underground, the chorus is elliott smith playing a bach cantata, and the bridge is so perfect that leonard bernstein tried to do it live on his 1967 tv show (if anyone has footage of that, i’d appreciate it). also, the left banke’s pianist wrote the song, but it’s about the bassist’s girlfriend. sigh.

#542: badly drawn boy - pissing in the wind (2000)

a very little known fact about both millennial indie rock and joan collins’ oeuvre is that her best naked lip-syncing work was done in badly drawn boy’s highly underrated pissing in the wind video, made around the time of the cinematic milestone these old broads (costarring debbie reynolds, shirley maclaine and elizabeth taylor). it’s a very erotic movie, plus a very erotic music video. and even though badly drawn boy is a poor man’s elliott smith, this song is secretly a twangy beauty.

#462: elliott smith - between the bars (1996)

not only is it raining, and not only is raining slowly, steadily and sadly, and not only is it forecasted to be raining until monday morning, but the national weather service informs that the strong pressure gradient between high pressure to the north and a coastal storm passing south of long island tonight will produce a period of strong east-to-northeast winds across the waters around long island, which, coupled with “astronomically high tides,” will cause nice flooding. also, my socks are wet. so the only thing to do, clearly, is listen to sad elliott smith songs with couplets like “still going strong/ xo, mom” and especially “drink up, baby, look at the stars.

#287: elliott smith - waltz #2 (xo) (1998)

a comment on youtube says, “this man is the most incredibler acoustical musician i have ever seen or heard on the face of the entire polant,” which is more or less all there is to say after watching elliott smith sing a song, except to add that “still going strong/ xo, mom” is the saddest couplet ever written.
