#965: loretta lynn - blue kentucky girl (1965)

as far as blue kentucky girls go she’s no emmylou harris, but she has those eyes with old mountain sadness, a banjo player in neon-colored plaid, a voice that sounds like pollen and pedal steel and tobacco, a husband named doolittle, and she swears this is her favorite song and she’ll love you by the moon above you. don’t leave her for the bright lights, friends.

#954: emmylou harris - blue kentucky girl (1979)

how could you not be very fond of the nation that gave us emmylou harris? just think, who’re the first five terrific people who come to mind? they’re matt groening, janet malcolm, thomas jefferson, stanley kubrick and walt “clyde” frazier, aren’t they? and guess what, they’re all from the united states of america! happy birthday, beautiful.

#698: ferlin husky (with simon crum, kitty wilson and jerry byrd) - the waltz you saved for me (grand ole opry, 1962)

in my 26th year i’m making it a priority to go around speaking only in three-part harmonies. plus, i’ll keep a pedal-steel guitar player named jerry “bird” byrd around with me at all times (he knew both hank williams and jerry garcia, incidentally). we’ll both wear suits, mine with the top button buttoned and his with a pocket square. of course, i’ll also have someone around to make bird effects whenever jerry and i do something pleasant.

#539: loretta lynn (with don helms) - your cheatin’ heart (1966)

bob dylan said that when he found out hank williams had been killed, the silence of outer space never seemed so loud. and when loretta lynn plays hank williams’ saddest song with his own pedal steel guitar player, even the dark matter in the colliding galaxies of the famous bullet cluster sheds tears and sniffles. those twangs are hazy cosmic screams.

in case the next decade ends in nuclear holocaust or complete financial collapse, the smithsonian should start compiling all the great things humanity has accomplished: aristotelian metaphysics, beethoven’s late quartets, loretta lynn’s hairdo, etc.

#501: loretta lynn - wine, women and song (1964)

i fervently feel that the 10s will be profoundly different than the 00s, but only if we collectively focus on the essentials, those listed in the titles of mid-60s country hits.

#320: loretta lynn (with bill monroe) - don’t come home a-drinkin’ (with lovin’ on your mind) (1967)

"i bloodied my husband’s nose the other night. i didn’t know i was doing it—i just woke up at three in the morning, and doolittle was holding a towel to his nose. he told me i sat straight up, in my sleep, yelling, ‘do you see this ring? do you see this ring?’ and i was a-throwing my hands around until my fingers dug into his nose. ‘loretta, what in the world were you talking about?’ doo asked me. i said i was dreaming about some old guy that tried to make a date with me when i first started singing. i didn’t have no ring at the time—we were too poor for that kind of stuff. what does it mean when you carry on in your sleep like that? somebody said it means you’ve got something on your mind. i said, ‘i know that.’ i ain’t got much education, but i got some sense. to me, this talking is almost like i’ve got things inside me that never came out before. usually, when something is bothering me, i write a song that tells my feelings, like, don’t come home a-drinking (with lovin’ on your mind). that’s really about me and my marriage. i’ve still got things inside me—sad things, happy things—that people don’t know about.” - loretta lynn’s autobiography, coal miner’s daughter, page one.
