#762: the pogues - streams of whiskey (1984)

instead of wearing green today and drinking daytime alcohol, everyone in the greater metropolitan area should be forced to write an essay on the meaning of shane macgowan’s partial male nudity in the seminal streams of whiskey video.

#710: roy orbison - dream baby (1965, singer concert hall, the netherlands)

ten at least slightly music related things that brought me great joy in 2010:

10. finding footage of roy orbison’s 1965 dutch concert online (just look at what the great spectacled one did to those poor dutch teenagers)

9. seeing aretha’s hat for the first time

8. finally getting around to ordering david bowie’s early 70s singles

7. sharing that photograph of leonard cohen and his honey

6. meeting mr. van dyke parks, his holiness

5. hearing my colleague zeke turner sing or at least kind of talk-hum aloud a line from every song on the marvelettes’ perfect playboy

4. telling ric ocasek outside of old town about liking weezer’s blue album

3. interviewing poor old crooner carly simon in bed about ken starr

2. finally finding something that married my two things closest to my heart, footage of spinning newspapers and the pogues

1. falling in love with joanna newsom’s have one on me, the best album of the year by such a wide margin that anyone who even hints otherwise is either a liar or an exceptionally obsequious member of kanye west’s entourage

#580: pogues - white city (1990)

the one undeniably great about today’s stock market crash was that it turned the internet into a giant montage of spinning newspaper headlines. such fear! such excitement! down! such curiosity! down! down! so many numbers! people caring about the media again! up! analysis! up! down! up! money! money! money! it was even more exciting than the tv coverage of 1987’s black monday, which was relatively sad and staid. but it was not as good as the the pogues’ white city video, which features such spinning headlines as “20,000 people attend london’s first greyhound races.” spinning newspapers will save the newspaper industry.

#538: shane macgowan, nick cave, bobby gillespie, glen matlock, chrissie hynde, mick jones, johnny depp, and more - i put a spell on you (2010)

the future of charity singles has been put in grave jeopardy by a group of tocacco-smoking rapscallions who have recorded such a pelvic, leathery, and tremendous screamin’ jay hawkins cover (to benefit haiti) that no one, including lionel richie, will be brave enough to gather a group of singing celebrities ever again. this is the charity single to end charity singles. someone get shane macgowan a nobel and a drink.

portrait of the shane macgowan as a young man—as a 19-year-old punk music magazine editor, actually. he is the hero of the day. he is the hero of the century.

the british photographer janette beckman, who has taken monstrously good photographs of joe strummer, shane macgowan, run d.m.c., and the younger people too, was kind enough to send along this exceedingly beautiful 1983 portrait of the jonzun crew’s yellow-wigged founder dressed up as george clinton dressed up as george washington dressed up as afrika bambaataa. thank you, janette.

#168: kristy maccoll & the pogues - miss otis regrets / just one of those things (1990)

last week’s pogues video had some things (loose eyeballs, elvis costello as a fascist) that i would have changed, but this entire video for two cole porter songs should be preserved for all ages to behold and admire, especially because of the multi-cultural drunken dance-off at the end.

just be sure to make it past the slower first half, because it’s the just one of those things section that has the circus folk, volcano, the sailors doing jazzhands, the little girls doing some sort of irish jig, and the front-man that genuinely looks like he’s going to fall over and lose more teeth any second now.

The Pogues - A Pair Of Brown Eyes
by robojames

#160: the pogues - a pair of brown eyes (1985)

if i had directed this video, i would have gotten nick tosches and steve buscemi to play barflies losing their coins to a broken jukebox in a dim-lit bar off a puddled alley. but instead there’s a little girl fighting orwellian fascists and the pogues’ producer elvis costello growling in front of blinded, knitting women.

also, an eyeball is dropped into a cup of tea, and then later it’s on the ground and eaten by a dog, which somehow makes sense when you look at shane macgowen’s teeth. (dental decrepitude justifies dog-eaten eyeballs).
