this is the face t.rex’s marc bolan would have made upon finding out that tumblr’s servers were back up, had he not died in a car crash a very long time ago. note that even that the bear on his t-shirt is happy about the news. note also that it’s an exceptional t-shirt. and note finally that the particular hip tilt of marc bolan’s arms-akimbo pose is the type of thing that 1970s english glam stars were very good at.

#705: t.rex - life’s a gas (1972)

not to be melodramatic, but tumblr’s 24-plus hours of downtime was basically like suffering through a long and sweaty nightmare about the deaths of the members of t.rex—first marc bolan’s wife crashes his purple mini 1275gt into a tree, the accident that killed him (but not her) after his lifetime of visions of vehicular manslaughter; then of course bassist steve currie perishes in his own car accident; and the cherry on top is drummer steve choking to death on a cocktail cherry (yup) during a morphine binge. but tumblr’s back, as this post proves, and life is sweet again. the feeling is semi-indescribable, it’s like listening to life’s a gas on headphones next to the french girls from the ride a white swan video, who’re standing with their eyes closed reciting dreamy lady, but to the tune of mambo sun, in a room with new york city on the hi-fi, in a house filled with props from that children of the revolution video with ringo starr. welcome back, tumblr!

#460: mott the hoople - all the young dudes (1972)

the best david bowie song that’s not actually a david bowie song is also the best pop smash about stealing clothes, popping pimples, funky little boat races, t.rex on tv, boogaloo, news about the end of the world, drag queens, boring 60s songs, wine, concrete and sex. most importantly, those sloppy and delicious hand claps during the chorus make i saw her standing there sound bad. and if you can tear your ears from the claps, you’ll hear ian hunter coo as the song closes, “hey you there, with the glasses. i want you.”

#409: t.rex - dreamy lady (1975)

t.rex loses 15 points for wearing an ill-fitting, multi-zipper jumpsuit, and he loses 40 more for wearing it with that half-ascot/half-necklace. but he wins 55 points for writhing against an illuminated star that rises up out of nowhere while singing “night is the right time/ to get acquainted with my head/ in my bed,” and gains a bonus point for looking like a mid-career robert smith a full decade before that sort of thing was a good idea. which means he comes out on top, as always.

#316: t.rex - new york city (1975)

a few million dollars of the national bailout should be spent on bringing t.rex’s marc bolan back to life, putting his purple blouse back on, teasing his hair back into its full floral glory, and getting him to do his jiving jazz hands move on top of city hall for one week. then everyone would be okay! a good boogie mind poem, which is what t.rex’s frontman (who really, really liked his cognac and cocaine) called this song, is just the thing manhattan needs to pick itself up from the financial floor. afterwards we could send him and his tall-hatted druids and giant toothbrushes to stimulate the most stricken areas of the country. he’s a one-man stimulus bill, stimulating the gents with his glam and the ladies with his wham.

only a man who so easygoingly wears a rainbow-sequined jacket belted with a rose could say, “i’m like a child in the sand on the beach of the land of you and i’m blue,” or, “you’re built like a car, you got a hubcap, diamond star halo, you’re dirty sweet and you’re my girl,” or, “i love the velvet hat, you know the one that caused a revolution,” or, “i got stars in my beard and i feel real weird for you.”

#212: the sweet - little willy (1972)

i was trying to find an early-70s willy nelson clip (preferably something from shotgun willy, which is somehow free to download here) but the generous gods of youtube searches somehow coughed up a song i’d never heard of by a band that may or may not have recorded ballroom blitz.

it basically sounds like t.rex covering the sesame street theme song, but with musicians who are all riding a very white swan under a very boiling mambo sun—and by that i mean doing all the blow a mid-level mid-70s contract with rca records could buy.

for christmas this year i’m definitely putting a sweater vest over my yellow jumpsuit.

#166: t.rex - ride a white swan (1976)

even though there’s no giant toothbrushes, stuffed zebras, or clown-painted ringo starrs, this clip of t.rex’s first single is a real humdinger of a bird. the lyrics say it’s a tune about eagles in sunbeams, druids in tall hats, tattooed gowns, bright stars on your forehead and black cats on shoulders, but i’ve always had a modest little theory that it’s a prophetic metaphor for snorting cocaine and heroin until god tells you to change your name from “t. rex” into “t.rex” and david bowie turns into your enemy and vegetarianism is given up for brandy and your albums suddenly have titles like futuristic dragon or zinc alloy and the hidden riders of tomorrow and high british tax rates force you to monte carlo and then your wife finally crashes your purple mini into a tree, and you die (after a life of visions of death in a car crash).

#165: t.rex - mambo sun (1972)

thank god for the lyric “girl you’re good/ and i’ve got wild knees, and also “i got a powder keg leg/ and my wig’s all pooped for you.”

#4: t. rex - children of the revolution (1972)

even though this website’s only been in business for three days, it’s high time there’s a video with giant toothbrushes, stuffed zebras, white-faced glam rockers hiding inside of pianos played by elton john, and some ringo starr in clown paint.

this scene, from the film born to boogie, follows david bowie’s glam arch-enemy, t-rex (aka marc bolen), playing live in apple studios in london. i’ll be damned if ringo’s little drum solo isn’t fantastic, and if elton weren’t wearing a black turtleneck with hearts painted under his eyes i’d like his honky tonking too.
